My publisher is putting a new edition of my 1988 book together and asked me to write a new introduction. Here it is. Comments please, I need an editor.

  1. Dave, It’s probably worth a mention, that erg training is a mandatory supplement for several international rugby programs. I can speak personally for it’s benefits & that also many of these ‘Crash B’ sprint competitors & online ‘rowers’ have never even seen a shell, much less row in one. Such is the testament to the benefits of rowing & the euphoric serenity that the regular self examinations engender. My personal codes, that ‘the body is evil & must be punished’ & ‘pain is just weakness leaving the body’ were formed by hours of rowing on Lake Washington in Seattle, Sippican harbour in Marion Ma & my ‘erg’! You learn to ask questions of yourself that can only be answered w/ sweat. A more zenlike approach to the ‘Inquistion’s’ trial by ordeal. Cheers JRN
