ESPN – Report: Armstrong to come out of retirement and ride for Astana – Cycling

This is a good news and will get me watching cycling again.
“Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement and compete in next year’s Tour de France, VeloNews reported Monday, citing sources close to the situation.

“Armstrong, who will turn 37 on Sept. 18, will join the Astana team and compete in five road races, the sources told VeloNews.

“He will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France. The sources told VeloNews that Armstrong will receive no salary or bonuses.

Armstrong’s manager, Mark Higgins, would not comment.

  1. Just finished reading a story on this as well, and was equally excited!

I always wanted to see Lance devote himself to races other than just the Tour…the spring classics will be great and having him back in the sport will help raise the prfile again

  2. It is official-Lance is coming out of retirement to 100% race the Tour de France. As a dork cycling fan I am bummed, as a lets cure cancer fan I think this is an amazing thing. As to cycling if he had said ‘I am 100% going to win the Giro, the Vuelta or the Hell of the North’ I would have been jazzed to see Lance show his versitility and bring those races up a few notches in recongition and prestige in the eyes of american cyclists and fans but just to suffer through all the build up to Lance grinding out another Tour win. I think my sock drawer needs rearranging.

The natural synergy between cycling and medicine that Lance has juiced big time will just grow. The PMC was started 25 years ago by one man and 35 friends and is now the largest donor to the Jimmy Fund and one of the largest donors in all of Cancer care and research. There is something universal and inclusive about simply riding a bike that lends itself to causes(plus through gearing and drafting CEO’s delude themselves into thinking they are better athletes then they are and that is okay becaue they give) Lance will only develop and spread this magic even further then he already has.

So I am trendy again. Happens once a decade or so. So after the parade next year lets watch the prologue. He is going to want to win that and get the yellow jersey early for sure.
