Four words I don’t like: Distal Bicep Tendon Rupture

Silly me, hanging like an orangutan, swinging and touching my toes to a bar at the Crossfit gym and POP! something important breaks inside of my left arm. A big bruise ensues, then deadness, then all sorts of pain. Now the arm is hanging useless by my side.

My selt-diagnosis: a rupture of the bottom of the bicep tendon, causing it to separate from my forearm. I’m waiting for an MRI to be scheduled to confirm it, but right now it looks pretty messed up and destined for surgical reattachment.

So there goes the 2012 ergometer racing season and my quixotic pursuit of a personal record. From what I’m reading in the support-forums the recovery will take four months.

Sucks getting old.

  1. David- My sympathies; when I was running and lifting I dreaded the pops and ankle rolls that signaled pain and forced inactivity. I hope your condition is not as dire as you predict.

  2. ugghhhh, and I was just polishing up on my memorization of the “The Charge of the Light Brigade” for your race!!!! Sorry David, bummer.

  3. Very sorry to hear that. I’m not sure if age and or physical condition are factors. I recall watching the Jets quarterback taking the handoff and a split second later his achilles tendon went. I understand when that happens the tendon rolls up like an old window shade, and they’ve got to fish it back down to reattach.

  4. David, I found your blog after googling “rowing with distal bicep tendon tear”. I injured my right bicep about a year ago in a fall, no repair done at that time as dr seemed to think it was just a strain. I did not let up on any training really, have been rowing competitively and doing triathlons on it over past year with minimal discomfort but with obvious tendon lengthening/bicep contraction. Now i’m finally evaluating getting reconstruction done after more and more strains seem to be happening, my ortho doc convinced me it’s just a matter of time before it tears fully.

I’m wondering what your recovery experience has been like this year? Could you share a little more on when you felt like you were back at 100%? I’m thinking of scheduling surgery for November/Dec then hopefully will be recovered for spring season and maybe even get a little time on the erg in, through probably not enough to be that fast.

    thanks,
