My question is this: how did an English major wind up in a profession obsessed with “metrics?” This is my version of hell on earth. I need to take my pants off to count to twenty-one and now I am living in Excel.

Oh C’mon! It’s fun stuff! I’m an English major too and I _dig_ it.
I met that cat Eric Peterson last week at an sheeshy event in Boston. He’s a former micologist (read mushroom farmer) from Oregon, currently VP Strategic Services at Visual Sciences. His books are very informative, and I am a big fan of the Web Measurement Hacks book.
So Mr English major and Mr Micology major now weave webs and nobody even studied entymology.
Personally, I take my pants off to count to 23 … on a good day, 24. I’m getting dizzy with metrics and modelling … common sense sometimes works too …
